It has been wonderful to start the DFI course today.
On reflection it was interesting to realise my prior involvement and connection to Manaiakalani listening to Dorothy. I realised that I have absorbed a reasonable amount of insight during my years as an RTLB without being directly involved as I am now. I now have a fuller understanding of the Learn, create, share approach our school is using and why. I know we have Hapara at our school but as yet I have not used it so this will be added to my to do list.
During day one I have become more familiar with with the features of the Google suite. In particular the editing functions in documents were very helpful. The work we did around titles and subtitles as well as explore were previously unknown to me. I have also found the voice to text works for me best in the UK English version!
Previously I have used the colours in the calendar but did not know how to do this in folders. During the day it did seem my file format is well set up. I think colouring the folders is probably the next step in refining and improving my system for the future.
My creation for today involved me using some of my newly acquired skills to begin formatting a dual school leader poster and interactive guide to assist our school in implementing our PB4L rules and student leadership roles as well as enhancing playground behaviour.

Kia ora Ian,
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how much we pick up on when we are on the periphery of something, I'm sure as we continue through the Connecting with Manaiakalani sessions you will continue to develop your connection with this kaupapa. Isn't it great that you can select the correct accent for you when using the voice typing! As someone else who grew up with MS Office, there are a lot of things which transfer over to the Googleverse, but it's always good when you have the time to be taught about those tricky little things and hidden gems in the Google tools.
Looking forward to connecting tomorrow.
Vicki
Kia ora Ian! It was great to meet you during the first DFI session and I have enjoyed reading your reflections. Much like you, some of my big take aways were the special history of Manaiakalani and the development of the kaupapa. I am also of the Microsoft generation and cut my digital teeth on Office. But I have grown to value the interconnectivity of the Google tools and their open platforms for educators. I also had a look into the Teachers Inquire Twitter feed where I found many examples of Manaiakalani teachers trialling new digital tools and the impact on practice. There is just so much resource to support effective digital learn-work flow and I feel incredibly privileged to be leveraging off years of Learn Create Share development. Also like you, I look forward to doing really innovative things with video to enhance learning and engagement. See you at the DFI. Naomi
